TOKYO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Kobe city said Thursday that it has finished building a hydrogen-fueled power generation facility that will supply electricity and heat to public facilities.

The Kobe municipal government said in a press release that the equipment will start test operations in the next few days and begin providing electricity and heat from February.

The one megawatt-class hydrogen gas turbine power generation equipment will supply electricity and heat to four facilities, including a hospital and a sports center.

It is the first time in the world that electricity obtained through hydrogen power generation will be provided to users in an urban area, said the release.

Hydrogen is a clean energy that does not produce carbon dioxide when burned.

Japan has announced last month a basic strategy for promoting the adoption of hydrogen as an energy resource, which aims to realize the full introduction of hydrogen-fueled power generation in Japan by around 2030.
