PHNOM PENH, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Friday designated Samdech Techo Hun Sen as the prime minister for an upcoming new-term government after his ruling party won a sweeping victory in a recent election, according to a royal decree.

"The prime minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia has duties to prepare the Cabinet members in order to ask for approval from the National Assembly," the monarch said in the royal decree.

Hun Sen, 67, who has been in power for 33 years, will continue to lead the government for another five years after his Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won all 125 parliamentary seats in the sixth general election on July 29.

Twenty political parties contested in the election. The National Election Committee official results indicated that the CPP garnered 4.88 million votes, or 76.84 percent, of the total valid votes.

In a thank-you letter to the king, Hun Sen vowed to do his best to serve the nation and people of Cambodia and said that he would submit the new Cabinet members to the National Assembly for approval in a parliamentary session on Sept. 6.
