TAIPEI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's inflation went up mildly in March, as the consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.58 percent from a year earlier, latest statistics showed Tuesday.

The year-on-year increase in March sent the CPI to its highest level in five months.

The core CPI that excludes fruit, vegetables and energy rose 0.47 percent year on year in March, while the wholesale price index (WPI) went up 1.19 percent from a year earlier to its highest level in four months.

Food prices saw the biggest spikes in March, with egg prices surging 30.21 percent year on year due to sharp cuts in supply as a result of serious flooding last year.

For the first quarter, the CPI rose 0.33 percent year on year, while the WPI increased 0.72 percent year on year.
